Westmount Quarry Pre-Demolition

Westmount Quarry is about to be completely demolished. I go in and take photos before it is all gone forever. Posted 18 March 2012

It’s been a year and a half since the Crapaudmatic post on Westmount Quarry. I have observed a big increase in activity here over the last month, so I took the camera and went for a closer look. The most obvious change is the absence of all the trees on the hillsides. Thankfully all that chainsaw noise is finally over (it went on for weeks).

The view from the flats above is in for a big change soon. Right now you can see way out to the castle. No more trees there for privacy.

The entire place looks like it’s being cleared out for demolition. All the temporary fencing from Crapaudmatic’s earlier post is gone. Supporting walls are all that is left of some structures.

I saw one sorry-looking building up against the cliffs that looked like it was about to collapse. A door stood open, beckoning. It was soon clear that this building didn’t have much time left, once I got inside.

That’s all for now. I’m curious to see what gets built here next. I know some more flats were proposed, but I don’t think the road there is ready for all that new traffic. At a minimum, Cheapside would need a new traffic light. That intersection was just redone (without any new traffic-control), so we will have to wait and see.

It’s a shame to see the artists’ space gone from the top building, but I was happy to find some graffiti decorating a few spots here and there. No harm done - just some paint in an abandoned building.
